No stage, no front row, no fourth wall. The audience sits inside the set — wrapped in 360° projection and surround sound — as one family’s story unfolds all around them.
Next to Normal is Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical about a mother living with bipolar disorder and the family holding on around her. This immersive production reimagines it for a single shared space: the performers move among the audience, projection turns the walls into memory and hallucination, and the score plays out close enough to touch.
Directed by Simon Pittman, the production has been staged internationally — in Barcelona, Buenos Aires and Lima — performed in English with Spanish subtitles. The company has brought together Tony Award-winner Alice Ripley and original Broadway cast member J. Robert Spencer alongside a local ensemble, with Adam Pascal appearing virtually.
Stripping away the proscenium changes everything. Without the safety of distance, the show’s central question — what it costs a family to keep going — lands in the same room as the people watching it.
